Chester Springs, Pennsylvania is an unincorporated community in Chester County in the southeastern part of the state. It is probably the most historically significant area in all of Chester County. History of Chester Springs

Chester Springs gets its name, as does historic Yellow Springs, from the freshwater springs that are found throughout the area. The native Americans first used the iron-rich spring water that had a yellow tinge to it for its healing qualities. The springs have probably been used for thousands of years. In the 1700s, Yellow Springs became a very fashionable spa village that attracted those seeking the therapeutic qualities of the spring water.

George Washington commissioned the first military hospital in North America to be built at Yellow Springs. General Washington visited here himself on a number of occasions.

The historic Yellow Springs Village is situated in Chester Springs. It includes two churches that were built in the 1770s by Lutheran and German Reformed members. Chester Springs is also home to the Mill at Anselmo, otherwise known as the Lightfoot Mill. It’s a grain mill built in 1747 that is perhaps the best maintained example of a water powered mill in the entire United States. The original wooden gears and the original millstones are still intact. The mill continues to grind grain into flour and corn meal which are sold in the gift shop.

From the early 50s to the early 70s, the village was the home of “Good News Productions,” a film studio responsible for creating over 400 films including the science-fiction film “The Blob”. That movie was filmed in nearby Downingtown.

Chester Springs Parks & Recreation

Nearby Marsh Creek State Park is a 1,705-acre park that includes the 535-acre Marsh Lake. The park rents a wide variety of water sports gear including kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, and even fishing gear. Bird watchers will enjoy Marsh Creek State Park as well with seasonal migration of the waterfowls that use the area as a rest stop. The park has actually been reported as an eBird hotspot and thus far 161 species have been reported at the park. The facility also includes a large swimming pool with sprinklers and fountains for the kids to play in.

Attractions in Chester Springs

The Chester Springs Studios is a dynamic arts center that is perhaps at the very epicenter of arts in northern Chester County. It began in 1978 as an offshoot of the historic Yellow Springs Village. It has subsequently grown in reputation as a nationally recognized center for the visual arts, especially in the areas of ceramics and painting. Chester Springs home owners and other area residents can participate in workshops that are conducted by visiting artists in varying expertise such as photography, painting, sculpture, and ceramics.

A popular destination for Chester Springs residents is the People’s Light & Theater Company, which is only a few miles away in Malvern. This superb theater is a cozy venue that offers a wide variety of plays including Shakespearean productions.

“Jazz at the Springs” has been celebrated for over 15 years every June. The event is held at the old tennis courts behind the Chester Springs Studios. Its a free event that local residents bring their chairs and blankets to. One can pack a picnic basket and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
