History of West Chester

The first business in West Chester was an inn called Turk’s Head and from there the little town exploded with industry. A post office, bank, fire company, heating and plumbing company and, of course, the railroad grew up around brick-paved sidewalks and broad avenues. With the industrial explosion came a population explosion and in 1862, the population was 77,000. Property for sale was bought by those building duplexes on the land and rented to factory and railroad workers. With prosperity, these workers later bought their own homes.

Within a few blocks of downtown, West Chester University serves the educational needs to nearly 14,000 students. With roots dating back to 1812, West Chester has evolved into a comprehensive university which excels in teacher education, business, health, natural and social sciences, music and the arts.
